What is the Ideal Bodyweight Ratio?

The subject of Ideal Body Weight (IBW) has remained a hot topic issue for decades. The subject is so critical because it touches on every aspect of human health and treatment. In particular, a doctor has to know your IBW to calculate the appropriate dosage. Besides, more people have become aware of health and fitness and want to have facts about their bodies, effectiveness of fitness training and efforts towards good health

The origin of Ideal Body Weight The first person to focus on IBW was Paul Broca (a French Army doctor) who had to establish the IBW weight for soldiers. His discovery and publishing of the first IBW called the Broca Index opened the way for other medical experts. In his index, Broca only used the height in centimeters, and then subtracted 100 to get the normal weight. Then, 10% of the normal weight was subtracted to get the IBW. So great was his discovery that it was applied for about a full century.

The calculator on this page uses the Miller formula which is explained further down on this page.
Keep in mind that the range is only a guideline. There are other factors to consider when thinking about an ideal weight. Things like body fat percent, age and muscle mass are likely to impact the weight range for you.

    Ideal Body Weight (IBW) Formulas

Miller's Formula of calculating the ideal body weight was established in 1983. This was the same time that Dr. Robinson was working on a different formula that was based on Devine Index modification. The Miller's formula is based on the belief that the ideal weight of a man should be 52 kilograms at 52 feet. For every additional foot on top of the 5 feet, an additional 1.9 kilograms should be added. However, the ideal weight for women should be 49 kilograms and 1.7 kilograms added for every five inches more.

The following table is a guide to a healthy weight range for each height and gender based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) normal acceptable range (for comparison purposes). The table does not take into consideration your age or your frame size. A person with a petite physique (small frame) should aim for an ideal weight at the lower end of the range and a person of the same height but with a large (or muscular) frame could quite satisfactorily weigh in at the top of the range according to this chart from the NHS in the United Kingdom.
